If you are wanting to start getting into gardening it can be a little bit overwhelming with where to begin. As a beginner the choice of tools and equipment can be confusing if you don't have a clue where to start and it also depends on the jobs you will be doing depending on your garden. An example is if you have faux grass your not going to need a lawn mower or edging sheers. I thought I'd help you out with a list of essential tools that every gardener needs.
Gloves
Garden Gloves are essential for all seasons. They protect your hands especially from getting splinters and from thorns etc. Pruning and tidying plants is a frequent gardening job so a good quality pair of gloves that are multipurpose and suitable for all seasons is the best option.
Secateurs
Pruning is a year round task so a good quality pair of secateurs is essential for keeping your garden neat and tidy. A good pair of secateurs will cut through bushes and tough branches easily. Opt for a pair that are lightweight yet sturdy and has a safety catch to prevent any nasty accidents.
Hand Trowel
A trowel is useful for many garden jobs such as hand weeding, planting, potting on and seed sowing. A stainless steel trowel is the best option as they are more durable, aim for a trowel that has a pointed shovel rather than a square edge. This makes it much easier to dig precise holes and helps cut through any tough areas, such as soil that’s heavy with clay or rocks.
Garden fork
As with a trowel a garden fork is another useful tool. A garden fork can actually be used for quite a few different gardening tasks so is a versatile tool. It can be used for breaking up hard soil, digging up heavily weeded areas etc. It’s much better than a spade for stony ground, as the prongs can hinge underneath rocks, lifting them out. Like with a trowel stainless steel is a much more durable option.
Watering can/Hose
Depending on the size of your garden you will need either a watering can or hose to keep your plants watered. In fact it maybe worth having both if you have a good size garden. A watering can is ideal for watering delicate pot plants and hanging baskets especially if used with a rose (the sprinkler attachment). A hose is a much quicker way for watering plants but also ideal for watering your grass too.
